Home cinema

A room apart.

A cinema is a room before it is a system. We begin with how the room will be used: a dedicated space for film, or a living room that becomes a cinema for the evening and returns to itself in the morning.

01

Picture

The room decides between projection and a direct-view screen. In a dedicated, light-controlled room we typically specify a Sony 4K laser projector and a screen sized to the seating distance; in a living room that has to work by daylight, a large direct-view display is often the better answer. Either way, the image is set up for the seats, not the showroom.

02

Sound

An AV receiver or processor from Denon or Marantz at the centre, loudspeakers positioned for the room and the listeners, with height channels for Dolby Atmos where the ceiling allows. Bass is managed with the room in mind, because the room is the largest component in any cinema.

03

Acoustics

Acoustic treatment shapes how the room sounds: reflections, decay and clarity. Sound isolation is a different discipline, concerned with what leaves the room and what enters it, and it is built into the structure rather than added later. We advise on both and are clear about which is which.

04

Lighting and control

Starting a film should not need a lesson. The room’s lights have a film scene on the switch by the door, wired in behind it, and the projector, receiver and sources answer to one remote. Equipment is housed out of sight, with ventilation and service access planned from the outset.
